- Despite increased numbers in recent years the ratio of refugees and asylum seekers in the Australian population is only 1:1,130, compared with 1:572 in the US, 1:117 in Switzerland and 1:456 in Germany. The greatest numbers of asylum seekers are in the developing world. Tanzania hosted over 500,000 in 2000, while Pakistan hosted about 2 million prior to September 11, 2001.
