Jews urged to show compassion for asylum-seekers by marching15 March 2002Below is an article published in Australian Jewish News urging members of the Jewish Community to March on Palm Sunday. THE Sydney Jewish community is being called on to show a strong Jewish presence at a rally to demonstrate compassion for refugees and asylum-seekers. Jews for Ethnic Tolerance (Jet), which is organising the Jewish involvement, will join a march under the banner "Compassion for Refugees - Peace and Justice" on Palm Sunday, March 24. "The rally is being supported by organisations across racial, religious, social and political groups," Jet president Zoe Williamson said. "It's important to have a strong Jewish contingent there." Refugees have been "demonised" by politicians in recent months, Ms Williamson said. "By joining this rally, we will show compassion and state that anyone seeking asylum should be treated with dignity." Beginning at Belmore Park, Eddy Avenue, near Central Station, at noon, marchers will walk silently to Victoria Park. Participants are asked to wear a blue top so that the Jewish contingent will be identified as a group. Look for the blue balloons at Belmore Park. From Australian Jewish News
