Purple Ribbons for Peace30 January 2003`Purple Ribbons for Peace' is a campaign initiated by the Walk Against the War Coalition, a broad based Sydney group bringing together over 60 organisations opposed to war against Iraq.
The ribbons idea was created to provide a symbol of solidarity for Australians to collectively say "No War on Iraq" and "No Australian Involvement". The campaign waslaunched in Sydney on Friday 24th January by leaders of our community (political, religious, union and the arts). Over the next few weeks, groups from the Coalition will be selling ribbons at prominent places within the city, as well as through their own organisations and peace networks. The coalition will also be selling ribbons at the Walk Against the War Rally on Sunday Feb 16, 2003 (Assemble Hyde Park North, noon) We are creating lapel ribbons (14cm) with safety pins, or car/bike/letterbox/bus. streamers (116cm). The lapel ribbons are being sold at 50c and the car ribbons at $2 (or donation). The coalition is offering to supply peace groups and organisations with ribbon, pins and instructions at cost to create ribbons for their own groups or peace events. If selling these ribbons on, we ask for a 50% donation of profits to be forwarded back to the coalition to continue our work.
