What has Iraq done to Australia? John Pilger, John Howard (actor) speak out

28 November 2002
“What has Iraq done to Australia? Apart from buying a great deal of our wheat? What is our fight with the Iraqi people? What is our fight with Iraqi children?”, asked Mr John Howard (actor) today.

"The last war against Iraq, the romantically named 'Desert Storm', in which Australia took part, killed over 200,000 people. In the decade since that calamity, partly as a result of the irradiation of southern Iraq and partly as a result of sanctions policed by our Australian Navy, over 500,000 children have died.

"Many of these children would have survived if medicines, common in our country, had been available to Iraqi doctors.

" 'Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.' " This is the golden rule of humanity. Of civilisation.

"That is why I have agreed to join other Australians in the Walk Against The War in Sydney on Saturday, November 30, said Mr Howard.

John Howard will join John Pilger (author and film maker), Chris Taylor and Craig Reucassel (CNNNN, The Chasers), Dr Robert Marr (Doctors against the War) and Rev Anne Wansborough (Uniting Church).

NSW Parliament House, Media Conference Room, Thursday November 28, 10.30am
Hosted by Arthur Chesterfield-Evans, Democrats MLC

Also present will be members of the Walk against the War Coalition, which is organising the November 30 event. The Walk Against the War Coalition is a broad-based alliance of more than 50 community, solidarity, student, community, trade union and peace groups.
