Iraqi leader to speak at anti-war rally

15 November 2002
Mr Kassim Abood, President of the Iraqi Migrants Council, will speak at the Walk Against the War, a major peace rally to be held in Sydney on Saturday, 30 November.

"The Iraqi community in Sydney is deeply opposed to any intervention in our country," Mr Abood said. "It is our ultimate right to decide the future of our country.

"The last American war against my homeland in 1991 cost over 200,000 lives and half a million of our little children have died in the last ten years as a result of the war and the sanctions," he said.

The Walk Against the War is part of a national weekend of action against the war on Iraq in which rallies are planned for cities and towns across Australia, spokesperson Dr Hannah Middleton said today.

"We will be walking to oppose any war on Iraq and to oppose any Australian involvement in such a war," Dr Middleton said.

The Walk will end in the Domain with speeches by Mr Abood, John Pilger, ACTU President Sharan Burrow, Bishop Pat Power, Sheikh Taj Aldin Al-hilali, Dr Sue Wareham, President of the Medical Association for the Prevention of War, and Rawan Abdul Nabi from the Palestinian community.

There will be performances by John Howard, Jenny Morris, Peter Combe, CNNNN (The Chaser), Leonardo's Bride and the Café at the Gates of Salvation.
