One year after the US-led invasion of Iraq, the Iraqi people are not free, Presidnet Bush is trying to extract himself in preparation for the November Presidential elections, Prime Minister Blair is exposed as a liar, and our Prime Minister Howard is deep in denial and also in deep trouble in an election year. Our historic people's movement has slowed them down, exposed and isolated them. Our renewed protests can force our government to bring the troops home and start to correct their war crimes of 2003. The Sydney Peace & Justice Coalition is organising Palm Sunday 2004, and it is sponsored by the NSW Ecumencial Council.

Statement by the Walk Against The War Coalition

Tens of thousands will be killed and injured

The US, Britain and Australia are massing over 200,000 troops to invade Iraq. An invasion of Iraq will cause the deaths and injuries of many tens of thousands of Iraqi people, and many of the invading force. It would destroy even more of the basic services of the Iraqi people, already long-suffering from war and the UN economic sanctions.

It is a grab for oil and power

The Bush Administration's drive to invade Iraq is an old-style armed grab for resources and power, and not a defence of modern values of democracy and international cooperation.

  • White House spokesman Ari Fleischer has stated: "The policy of the US is regime change, with or without [weapons] inspectors." Iraq has the world's second largest oil reserves, and the Bush Administration is led by oil men.
  • No convincing or publicly available evidence demonstrates that Iraq possesses Weapons of Mass Destruction or that its armaments pose an immediate threat to any neighbouring countries, or any other country.
  • There is no established link between the Iraqi regime and Osama Bin Laden / Al-Qa'eda.

The Bush Administration is the real threat to peace in the Middle East.

Danger of nuclear war

Israel and the United States are prepared to use nuclear weapons if they 'feel threatened' by the Iraqi military during the proposed invasion. This would be a crime against humanity.

Not in Our Name

Howard is wrong when he defies the majority of Australians to say war is in our best interests. This war is opposed by the great majority of the world's people and countries. Only 6% of Australians support a US-led invasion of Iraq, if not sanctioned by the UN (ACNielsen poll, SMH Jan 18). Australia's long term interest in peaceful international relations will be greatly damaged by the proposed war, and Australian lives will be put at risk for the wrong reasons.

Bullying the United Nations

The UN Charter, Article 1, Section 4 states: "All members shall refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state... ". A UN Security Council vote in favour of war will only be the result of bullying by the Bush Administration. We oppose this war and Australia's involvement whether or not it is endorsed by the UN Security Council.

'Regime change' is for the Iraqi people

Only the Iraqi people can change Saddam's dictatorship into a democracy. Bombs and war will bring a US military dictatorship, not stability and democracy. Iraq could break into three parts and the entire Middle East could be engulfed in upheaval and war.

Waste of precious resources

The US military budget is now $US437 billion per year, which is larger than the whole Australian economy. Yet global poverty and inequality are getting worse. We don't need a new Middle East war and arms race. We need a program for global justice and peace.
